Unit 6: Great Storytellers

Lesson 1: Introduction to Great Storytellers

Objective:

- To introduce the topic of great storytellers

- To develop listening and speaking skills through a discussion

- To activate prior knowledge about famous storytellers

Materials:

- Pictures of famous storytellers

- Chart paper

- Markers

- Listening activity handout

Procedure:

1. Warm-up (10 minutes):

- Show pictures of famous storytellers such as Hans Christian Andersen, J.K. Rowling, Roald Dahl, and Shakespeare.

- Ask students if they know who these people are and what stories they have written.

- Elicit responses from students and write them on the chart paper.

2. Pre-listening activity (10 minutes):

- Hand out the listening activity handout to students.

- In pairs, students discuss the questions on the handout.

- Monitor the pairs and provide any necessary language support.

3. Listening activity (15 minutes):

- Play the audio file for the listening activity.

- Students listen and answer the questions on the handout.

- After listening, check the answers as a class.

4. Discussion (15 minutes):

- Divide the class into small groups.

- In their groups, students discuss the following questions:

- Who is your favorite storyteller? Why?

- What qualities make a great storyteller?

- Encourage students to use the new vocabulary and expressions introduced during the listening activity.

5. Whole class discussion (10 minutes):

- Select a few groups to share their ideas with the whole class.

- Write key points from the discussion on the chart paper.

- Facilitate a class discussion by asking follow-up questions or inviting students to give examples to support their opinions.

6. Conclusion (5 minutes):

- Summarize the key points from the discussion.

- Emphasize the importance of storytelling in different cultures and throughout history.

- Preview the upcoming lessons on different types of storytelling, such as folktales and myths.

Assessment:

- Monitor students' participation during the discussion and provide feedback as necessary.

- Collect and review the listening activity handout for understanding of the audio material.

- Informally assess students' speaking skills throughout the lesson.

Extension:

- Assign a short writing task for homework where students write a paragraph about their favorite storyteller and why they like their stories.

- Encourage students to do further research on their favorite storyteller and prepare a short presentation for the next lesson.
